MUMBAI: Filmalaya Studio, founded 47 years ago by movie moghul of yesteryear Sashadhar Mukherjee, is all set for a facelift. The four-stage studio, once a state-of-the-art complex used by big production houses, went into decline after the 70s. Under the Rs 110-crore redevelopment plan, the studio will be part of a complex that will include premium residential apartments, spread across five wings.
Project manager Mathew John of Mayfair Housing said: "The studio will have two levels of car parking in the basement, with make-up rooms. The office will be on the periphery of the studio on the ground floor."
Mono Mukherjee, studio manager of Filmalaya, said it would take time to finalise the plan for the number of stages and make-up rooms that will be set up in the studio." He, however, informed that the studio would not be functional for a year. Filmalaya Studios was built by Sashadhar Mukherjee in 1948 after he moved out of Bombay Talkies. Nasir Husain's Dil Deke Dekho was the first movie to be shot here. At least 1,000 films were subsequently canned here, including Dilip Kumar's Leader, Joy Mukherjee's Love in Simla, Sunil Dutt's Hum Hindustani, Rajesh Khanna's Chhaila Babu, Salman Khan's Sangdil Sanam and Hrithik Roshan's Na Tum Jaano Na Hum. However, as it was not air-conditioned, studios that were renovated were preferred over it. In its new avatar, one of the first films to be shot there will be a remake of Dil Deke Dekho, to be made by Subir Mukherjee, one of Sashadhar Mukherjee's sons.
